It’s no wonder the British Virgin Islands has earned its reputation as one of the world’s premier sailing destinations. Between crystal-clear waters, warm sandy beaches, and steady trade winds, the BVI is an island-hopping paradise that beckons adventurers from across the globe.

If you’ve chosen to visit, you won’t be disappointed! There’s truly something for everyone in this Caribbean sailing haven.

One question we frequently hear from travellers is: “What’s the best way to get to the BVI?” When adventuring with Dream Yacht Charter, we’re determined to make your itinerary as smooth and stress-free as possible. Here are several excellent options to reach your paradise destination, whether by direct flight or via the popular ferry from St Thomas to Tortola.

Here’s how to reach the BVI, plus tips on choosing the right ferry route

Flying Direct to Beef Island, Tortola (EIS)

For fast travel and plenty of ferry connections, flying directly to Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport on Beef Island, Tortola (EIS) is a popular choice. This streamlined approach means less time in transit and more time enjoying your yacht charter!

One common flight option is to fly via Miami International Airport (MIA). For both Europeans and Americans, this route provides a straightforward connection that minimises logistics – especially after tiring transatlantic travel.

If MIA doesn’t have the flight you need, try flying from a different US city into San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU). From there, you’ll be able to find a direct flight to EIS. This well-travelled route operates frequently throughout the week!

Finally, you can also fly from a US city to St. Thomas (STT) and then continue to Tortola via ferry – a 45-60 minute journey. Although this is a tad more complicated than a direct EIS flight, ferrying from STT has its own unique perks. Here’s why this option might be a fit for you!

Ferry from St Thomas to Tortola BVI: The Scenic Route

Some travellers ferry from St. Thomas to Tortola BVI simply because it’s a more economical option. Others select this itinerary because it provides an opportunity to stay overnight and enjoy some time in Charlotte Amalie. Occasionally, big groups of travellers will fly into STT, then split a private water taxi to ferry to Tortola from St. Thomas!

When choosing this option, however, timing is crucial. Ferries don’t wait for missing guests, so coordinate your flight arrival with ample time to make your scheduled departure and avoid unnecessary overnight stays.

Several ferry operators provide a regular service between St Thomas and Tortola:

  • Road Town Fast Ferry offers multiple daily crossings between Charlotte Amalie (St Thomas) and Road Town (Tortola).
  • Smith’s Ferry Service connects St Thomas to Road Town with comfortable, passenger-focused service.

Planning Your BVI Arrival

No matter your route to the BVI, here’s how to ensure a comfortable arrival at your yacht charter:

  • Book flights and ferry from St Thomas to Tortola well in advance, especially if you’re travelling between December and April.
  • Allow sufficient buffer time between connections, for both the St Thomas to Tortola ferry and the Tortola to St Thomas ferry.
  • If ferrying from St. Thomas, research visa and passport requirements thoroughly, as the BVI is a British territory, while St Thomas is a US territory.
  • Download sailing-focused travel apps to get the latest weather forecasts, ferry schedules, and local navigation.

The journey to the BVI is the final gateway before starting your memorable sailing holiday. Whether you fly directly to Beef Island or take the scenic ferry from St Thomas to Tortola, paradise awaits!
