Welcome to the second chapter of our Bahamas series – a voyage into the soul-stirring beauty of the Abacos. Here, the sea sparkles like glass, the breeze carries whispers of adventure, and each island holds secrets waiting to be uncovered.

Just a short flight from Florida, the Abacos stretch across 120 miles of pristine cays and islands, offering more than just a sailing destination – they offer a state of mind. Picture swaying palms, barefoot beach bars, pastel villages steeped in history, and endless turquoise horizons. This is your invitation to slow down, set sail, and discover the magic of the Bahamas.

Abacos Bahamas

1. Getting There & Setting Sail

Fly into Marsh Harbour’s Leonard M. Thompson International Airport, where Dream Yacht’s Conch Inn Marina awaits—just a 10-minute taxi ride from the terminal. The base offers provisioning, Wi-Fi, and immediate access to your sailing adventure. Our base staff is waiting to help you get off the dock with local knowledge and itinerary tips.

If you are provisioning yourself, Maxwell’s Supermarket and Abaco Groceries are both a short taxi ride from the Dream Yacht base. For party supplies Jimmy’s Liquors has a large selection of libations.

Iconic Itinerary Stops in The Abacos

  • Hope Town, Elbow Cay – A picture-perfect harbour with pastel cottages and the iconic 1860s red-and-white kerosene lighthouse—one of only three still operating
  • Treasure Cay – Renowned for its award-winning beach and expansive 164-slip marina. A great spot to stock up supplies or dine at local favourites like Creole fish, Abaco conch chowder, and bushwackers
  • Green Turtle Cay – Home to the New Plymouth settlement and the upscale Green Turtle Club
  • Great Guana Cay – Party at Nippers and enjoy the 4 mile stretch of white sand beach. Watch the sunset at Grabbers with conch fritters and beach games
  • No Name Cay – Meet the famous swimming pigs on this unforgettable stop
  • Fowl Cay National Park – A protected marine area ideal for snorkelling amid coral outcrops and vibrant sea life

3. Sailing Conditions & Best Time to Visit The Bahamas

Expect warm, comfortable weather (28 – 30 °C) from December to April. Trade winds typically blow steady at 10 – 15 knots, making navigation idyllic – but be mindful of shallow flats and tides up to 3.5 ft. The hurricane season runs from June to November

4. Experience & Charter Options

  • Bareboat: Ideal for experienced sailors craving independence on catamarans or monohulls
  • Skippered: Enjoy your trip worry-free with a local captain
  • Easy Crewed: Rather fully relax and enjoy your holiday with no hassle? A professional captain and chef will handle everything – perfect for first-time sailors
  • By-the-Cabin Cruises: A budget-friendly way to sail without chartering the whole vessel, offering private cabins and communal adventure

5. Practical Tips

  • Currency & Customs: US $ are accepted alongside Bahamian dollars; GB passports are required.
  • Mobility: Taxis operate in Marsh Harbour and across islands—remember to carry some cash. Golf carts are fun for smaller isles like Elbow Cay and Green Turtle Cay
  • Permits & Conservation: A fishing permit includes cruising permission; mooring buoys are provided to protect coral reefs
  • Connectivity: Wi-Fi is available at the base and select cafes and marinas; expect limited service in more remote spots, but main islands have good service

6. Why the Abacos?

  • Unspoiled Beauty: Unlike bustling cruise destinations, the Abacos offer quiet anchorages, authentic local culture, and spectacular marine biodiversity
  • Diverse Activities: From snorkelling and diving to bar-hopping, fishing, paddleboarding, lobstering, stargazing, and pig-feeding—there’s something for everyone
  • Flexible Cruising: Customise your trip with varied itineraries – whether a weeklong circumnavigation or brief stops at dream beaches like Tahiti Beach
