Five great reasons to go on a yacht charter in Grenada

Caribbean

One of the Caribbean’s most beautiful islands, Grenada is home to an abundance of wildlife, serene beaches and exceptional sailing, whether you are looking for a bareboat or by the cabin yacht charter.

With the help of our friends at the Grenada Tourism Authority, we’ve pulled together a list of our top five reasons to visit the Spice Island on your next sailing holiday to the Caribbean

Beautiful beaches

If you’re looking for a destination that offers some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, look no further – Grenada is the place for you! Miles and miles of white sand await you at Grand Anse Beach, a firm favourite with us here at Dream, where two miles of powdery soft sand meet the warm waters of the Caribbean sea with a majesty that is almost hypnotic.

The south west coastline of Grenada houses some of the best beaches the island has to offer. From Grand Anse Beach, sail west to beaches including Morne Rouge, a half crescent coastline with perfectly calm waters for mooring so that you can spend a day enjoying the warm sunshine and party atmosphere that this picturesque beach provides. Further west, you’ll find Magazine Beach, with its quiet atmosphere and delicious dining options and Pink Gin Beach, an ideal beach for children, with calm waters and a gradually sloping descent into the clear, glistening ocean.

Mouthwatering cuisine

One of our favourite things about Grenada is the varied array of culinary delights that are on offer. From delicious restaurants to pure Grenadian chocolate, your palate will think it has hit the jackpot while on a sailing holiday to the Spice Island.

A visit to Belmont Estate is a must for chocolate lovers out there, where, as well as taking a tour of the chocolate plantation itself, you can see the process involved in creating some of the world’s most delicious chocolate, some of which are flavoured with the island’s home grown spices such as nutmeg and ginger.

The treasure chest of fragrant spices grown in Grenada are the reason it is affectionately known as the ‘Spice Island’. Nutmeg, ginger, mace, cinnamon and saffron are just some of the island’s most popular exports, with nutmeg being of such importance to the country, that it appears prominently on the national flag.

World Class sailing

The waters surrounding Grenada are ideal for sailors of all abilities, with deep ocean trade winds blowing towards the shore that create excellent sailing conditions throughout the year. Good berthing is available along the majority of the coastline and Port Louis Marina, home to our fleet of over 40 yachts, is both modern and charming.

Racing off Grand Anse beach is spectacular, and, although on sheltered side of the island, there are often great waves that make for exciting viewing for those spectating some of the sailing events that take place in the area. We are proud sponsors of the 2020 Grenada Sailing Week, taking place from 26 – 31 January 2020. Sailors from around the world flock to the island to take part in this growing event, where an amazing party atmosphere is coupled with some of the world’s best sailing. Contact us today to find out how you can take part in the next event.

Shimmering seas with added surprises

As well as offering extremely welcoming waters, perfect for swimming and watersports, Grenada is the perfect place for a spot of underwater fun. Scuba diving and snorkelling are fabulous around the island, where the shimmering, clear aqua is home to an abundance of marine life including turtles, groupers, manta rays and angel fish.

The mysterious shipwrecks that are dotted beneath the water line make for exceptional viewing, including Rum Runner and Bianca C, and an underwater volcano, lovingly referred to as ‘Kick ‘em Jenny’ is the power source of the River Sallee Hot Springs, an ideal location for a relaxing dip in bubbling water.

Located near to St George’s, a visit to ‘The Underwater Sculpture Park’ is a must. The underwater art gallery in the Molinere Beausejour Marine Protected Area is the brainchild of English sculptor and passionate diver, Jason de Caires Taylor and is the first submerged art and sculpture park in the world. The park is home to 65 unique sculptures, each of which are anchored to the sea floor creating a sub-aqueous extravaganza.

Wonderful wildlife

Grenada is home to some amazing wildlife, and a sailing holiday to the island is a perfect way to visit some of the national parks situated there. Visit Grand Etang National Park and Reserve for a day of exciting encounters with mona monkeys, colour changing frogs, broad winged hawks and armadillos. The park is located 1,740 feet above sea level and encompasses the Grand Etang Lake and Concord Falls, where three magnificent waterfalls provide a serene environment for the wildlife that reside there.

The Island is home to over 150 species of birds, including the beautiful but endangered Grenada dove, black-necked stilt, kite and bananaquit and a wide variety of non-venomous snakes, lizards and bats.

How to get there

Flights are available from the UK to Grenada via St. Lucia or Barbados with Virgin Atlantic and British Airways. With its position at the base of The Grenadines, Grenada’s International Airport, situated in St George’s is the perfect base point for your sailing holiday around The Windward Islands.
