Just got your skipper’s licence? Or want to try out a sailing holiday for the first time? There’s no better place to dip your toes into yacht chartering than Croatia

As one of the most established yacht charter companies in the world, Dream Yacht Worldwide offers new sailors the freedom to explore this stunning coastline with confidence. With decades of experience and one of the largest fleets in the industry, we provide exceptional service and flexibility – whether you want a skippered charter, cabin cruise, or bareboat.

Our charter bases in Trogir, Šibenik, and Dubrovnik will give you access to the very best of the Croatian coast. With sailing routes to suit all skill levels and interests, here’s why Croatia is the perfect starting point for sailors and charter guests.

Easy Sailing Conditions For Beginners

Croatia Sailing

Croatia’s popularity with novice sailors isn’t just about its beauty, culture, or cuisine – it’s also very forgiving and manageable for first-timers. Here’s why:

  • Calm summer conditions: From May through September, the Adriatic Sea enjoys mild weather, with steady breezes and minimal swell. The famous Maestral wind – dubbed ‘the good wind’ – that blows through the area is the sailor’s best friend. Breezing through every day for about ten hours, it provides predictable and pleasant sailing conditions that beginner sailors will appreciate.
  • Sheltered waters: The Adriatic Sea is relatively enclosed, and there are lots of protected bays and harbours offering safe anchorage options for every night of your trip.
  • Short sailing distances: The Croatian archipelago is the largest in the Adriatic Sea. With hundreds of islands to explore, most within just a few nautical miles of one another, you’re never too far from land. Sail for 2-3 hours in the morning, anchor for lunch and a swim, and reach your evening destination by sunset – no overnight passages or exhausting legs required.
  • Clear navigation: Croatia’s easy line-of-sight sailing, reliable charts, well-marked channels, and excellent signage give beginner sailors extra peace of mind.
  • Top-tier infrastructure: One of Europe’s favourite holiday destinations, Croatia is full of modern marinas with all the amenities, fuel docks, restaurants, and convenience stores you need. Plus, English-speaking locals and staff can guide you and make your experience smoother.

Best Croatia Sailing Regions for First-Timers

Dubrovnik

Newbie sailors should check out these recommended sailing regions and routes:

Split & the Dalmatian Coast

Sailing from Trogir or Šibenik, you can cruise through the heart of Dalmatia and access a chain of islands that blend Croatia’s natural beauty and cultural charm. This route is arguably the most beginner-friendly with well-developed marinas, predictable winds, and popular hotspots like Brač, Hvar, Šolta, and Vis just a short sail apart.

This area is ideal for a 7-day loop and is dotted with provisioning ports, swimming coves, and even blue caves waiting to be discovered.

Dubrovnik Archipelago

Sailing from our Dubrovnik yacht charter base, you can explore the quieter, more historic part of Croatia. This southern route contains lush green islands, sleepy fishing villages, and fewer yachts on the water – great for a relaxed introduction to sailing. On this route, be sure to visit Lopud, Šipan, and Mljet to immerse yourself in nature and local culture.

Must-Visit Islands That Are Great for New Sailors

Trogir

Make your first Croatia sailing holiday unforgettable by visiting these beginner-recommended islands:

Šolta

Just a short hop from our Trogir yacht base, Šolta is a quiet island with picturesque towns that are rich in local traditions. It’s great for stress-free mooring and lazy lunches, and when it’s time to walk off the food, there’s beautiful woodland and quaint harbours to explore.

Brač

The perfect island for a day of beach hopping, Brač is easy to navigate and is famous for its stunning Zlatni Rat beach – also called the ‘Golden Horn’ for its unusual protruding shape.

Hvar

One of Croatia’s main tourist hotspots, Hvar, is a cosmopolitan island with plenty of mooring options and a bustling nightlife. And with local vineyards and a hilltop fortress to explore, there’s truly something here for everyone. Beginner sailors will appreciate its protected anchorages and marina access in Hvar Town and nearby Stari Grad.

Vis

Vis is the furthest of the central Dalmatian islands, but it’s still reachable in a 7-day itinerary – and definitely worth the trip. Its deep harbours, quiet coves, and old-world feel offer safe anchorage and serenity, especially in Komiža or Stiniva Cove.

Don’t Miss These Highlights

Hvar

It’s not all about sailing! Here are some absolute must-dos to immerse yourself in Croatian culture and natural beauty between sailing legs:

  • Check out UNESCO World Heritage Sites: Stroll through ancient Roman architecture at Diocletian’s Palace in Split, or wander the cobbled streets of Dubrovnik Old Town – both UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Dubrovnik was also the primary filming location for King’s Landing in the Game of Thrones TV Series.
  • Savour local cuisine: Croatia has some of the best (and freshest!) seafood in the Mediterranean region, with many restaurants serving locally caught fish and shellfish. If you get the chance, sample some locally produced wines in family-run konobas or vineyards – you won’t regret it!
  • Scenic villages and markets: Visit stone-built towns like Trogir, browse quaint waterfront markets, and soak in the slower pace of island life.
  • Swim and snorkel: Drop an anchor in hidden bays for midday swims in crystal-clear water. Some of our guests’ favourite spots include the breathtaking Blue Lagoon near Drvenik and Palmizana Bay near Hvar.

Charter Options for Sailing First-Timers

At Dream Yacht, we offer several charter options to match your needs and comfort level. These include:

  • Skippered charters: Want the freedom of a private yacht but with an experienced local captain to sail it? A skippered charter is ideal for beginners who either want to learn the ropes or simply relax.
  • Cabin charters: Don’t want to rent the whole boat? Book a cabin charter and join our crew and other guests for the journey – we’ll take care of everything, from navigation to meals. Cabin charters are a more affordable option, and they’re great for solo travellers or couples looking for a social, easygoing experience!

With local teams on hand at all our Croatian bases, you’ll have expert guidance and full support throughout your journey. You can read more about our various yacht charter types here
