That’s why we’re thrilled to announce the launch of two new bases to our portfolio, in Newport, Rhode Island and Lake Champlain in the state of New York, both offering fantastic sailing in two of the most beautiful summer sailing destinations in the USA.
Here, we take a look at the highlights of each of these sailing grounds with the must see places to visit and our top tips on where to eat and drink while there.
Newport, Rhode Island
A historical sailing town, Newport is located in the New England province of Rhode Island and is steeped in nautical history. Our new base at Christie’s Landing in association with Navtours is an ideal starting point to visit some of America’s most notable tourist destinations, including Cape Cod, the Hamptons and Conanicut Island amongst others. It is also famous for hosting the most popular sailing regatta in the world, the America’s Cup. The town has been home to many seafaring captains due to its proximity to the easy stretches of water that are accessible from the harbour.
Head to the Hamptons on Long Island for a relaxing day on the beach, where New Yorkers flock in the summer months to get away from the hustle and bustle of Manhattan life and the streets are lined with upscale boutiques and gourmet restaurants, all offering a taster of New England America. Sail to Menemsha in Martha’s Vineyard, the filming location of the 1980’s classic, Jaws, and summer playground to some of America’s rich and famous or head across Nantucket Sound and spend the day moored off Tuckernuck Island where you’ll find unique wildlife and total tranquillity. While in Newport, we recommend visiting the Brick Alley Pub and Restaurant, where you’ll find traditional American cuisine in a classic setting.
Lake Champlain, New York
A stunning deep water lake surrounded by the lush green mountains of Vermont and cascading granite cliffs, Plattsburgh City Marina is located in the middle of Lake Champlain and is a beautiful location with a picturesque shoreline, perfect for discovering the local history. Local re-enactments of the “War of Plattsburgh” are frequent and a must see while there. If you enjoy a spot of cycling, head to Au Roche State Park, which has plenty of cycle trails and a pretty sandy beach perfect for a spot of sunbathing or swimming.
If you’re a wine buff, venture to North Hero Island where you can pay a visit to one of the local boutique wineries and head to the vibrant town of Burlington, Vermont where you can explore the area’s trendy restaurants and laid back culture. A sailing holiday to Lake Champlain enables you to enjoy all of the history and charm of small town America as well as the beauty of this region both on the water and land.
